GALMA has a two-fold dimension. On the one hand, GALMA aims to monitor and analyse the provision of media accessibility in Galicia, to promote an increase in the quantity of this provision and to produce the first media accessibility guidelines in Galicia. On the other hand, as a research group recognised by Universidade de Vigo, GALMA has an international vocation to host and coordinate the work of a vibrant team of researchers and PhD students from all over the world who share research interests and are already working together in several international projects, often engaging with both users and the industry.

As well as with research projects and academic publications, GALMA also engages with training (for Higher Education students, professionals or users) and industry-related work, such as the provision of accessibility services, the production of accessible films, different types of collaboration with governmental regulators, broadcasters, production companies or user associations and the certification of media access professionals, for example with LiRICS (Live Respeaking Certification Standard) or with the certification of NER evaluators.

The aim of GALMA is to promote research, training and knowledge transfer in the area of media accessibility for the benefit of people who, for different reasons, cannot have access to original audiovisual media. The work carried out within GALMA is aligned with a wide notion of media accessibility that concerns people with disabilities, cognitive impairments and learning or age-related difficulties, but also users without disabilities who may need linguistic access to audiovisual content produced in a foreign language.

Researchers working at GALMA are thus concerned with a wide range of topics regarding different audiovisual translation modalities (subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, audiodescription for the blind and partially sighted, dubbing, media interpreting, etc) and special attention is paid to two issues: quality in media accessibility and the integration of media accessibility as part of the audiovisual production process.
